5 Ways to Live Sustainably
by Sarah Ghafoor

Committing to a more sustainable lifestyle starts with education and awareness. Making small changes every day can create a big impact. Here are five ways to lead a more environmentally-conscious life!
- Avoid single-use plastic: This includes grocery bags, takeout containers, plastic cutlery and beverage bottles. Single-use plastics can take more than 450 years to decompose, leaving microplastics that harm wildlife. Instead, opt for reusable water bottles, shopping bags and straws. Not only do they benefit the environment, but they also reduce the costs of replacement long term.
- Start composting: Instead of letting food scraps go to waste, save your eggshells, fruit and vegetable peels coffee grounds for composting. An optimal compost pile typically consists of ⅓ nitrogen-rich material, like food or grass clippings, and ⅔ carbon, such as dryer lint and corrugated cardboard. Composting creates essential nutrients for a garden or household plants.
- Drive less: Carbon emissions from vehicles are the biggest source of pollution in Canada. Avoiding unnecessary trips and using your car less will save you money on gas and will allow you to accumulate mileage slower. Choosing to walk or cycle is a better choice for the environment and for your physical health
- Reduce energy consumption: When electronics or appliances are plugged in, they are consuming energy even when they aren’t in use. To reduce standby power, try unplugging your phone chargers, hairdryers, toaster and other electronics when you aren’t using them. You can also use a power bar to turn off multiple electronics at once.
- Purchase mindfully: To reduce overconsumption, brainstorm alternatives you can use instead of buying new products. You can also consider upcycling or repairing old items to give them a new life. When shopping, try purchasing locally and from organizations that promote ethical values.
